Cinnamon Essential Oil

£6.00 10ML WARMTH PASSION
By August, everything smells of cinnamon. None of it is cinnamon.
By August the high street is selling you the rumour of a spice: the pumpkin latte in its sleeve, the plug-in, the supermarket 'cosy' range, weeks early and at a markup. This is the actual plant all of it is trying to borrow from.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING

You have been buying autumn from the seasonal aisle.

Every year it starts sooner. The supermarket builds an aisle where three gourds and a pumpkin-shaped mug try to form a lifestyle, and you buy in: the mug, the plug-in refill promising a hearth that delivers a biscuit losing an argument with a radiator. For a fortnight the room smells of a spice you've never met. Then it runs dry, and you buy another.

You buy autumn from a shelf each year, when it turns up outside, on time, for nothing.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Cinnamon Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves and twigs, from Sri Lanka where the true cinnamon grows. Bottled by hand in small batches, slowly, because a heat like this rewards attention. Hot first, then sweet, and it doesn't wait to be noticed. It's the thing half the high street is named after and almost none of it contains.

The Pumpkin reading is zero. Pumpkin was never in the room; it was a marketing decision.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, cinnamon is the spice we keep at the hot end, for warmth, nerve and the loud version of an evening, the real feeling the season only hints at.

  • Nerve: We keep it for the old rite of courage: the folk scent for saying the thing plainly, off the calendar, whenever you need it.
  • Bolder: For feeling warmer and braver at once, more like the loud version of yourself. Heat that arrives, not heat described on a label.
  • Hot air: Fills a space with a hot, sweet, red spice that doesn't wait to be noticed. The spice cupboard opened; the room, explaining itself.
  • The bold evening: Reach for it of an evening you've no intention of keeping subtle, in July as readily as January.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Warmth does not have a launch date.

In folklore cinnamon was never seasonal. It was reached for whenever a person wanted to feel bolder, more like the loud version of themselves, in July as readily as January. A few drops of an evening, and you get the actual heat, not a scheduled impression of it. What it warms is the mood, and the nerve of the person standing in it.

It doesn't return for one week in October. The urgency was never the spice's; it was yours.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE FIRST TO SAY 'COSY'

For the friend who becomes a different, cinnamon-scented person the moment the coffee chain permits it, and has earned the real thing for once, not a paper cup with seasonal self-esteem.

To the first to say 'cosy'

The actual thing. Finally.

GIFT · THE TASTEFUL ROOM

For the room that's smelled of a plug-in called Autumn Cottage since the day it was painted and has never once been surprised. Surprise it.

To the tasteful room

Ribbon included. Marketing budget not.

GIFT · THE TONED-DOWN

For the person who keeps themselves turned down in every room they enter. This is the scent of turning it back up. Wrap it, and say nothing.

To the toned-down

Louder suits you.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The one who genuinely prefers the plug-in, buys 'Autumn Cottage' refills by the crate, and finds real cinnamon 'a bit much'. To them the actual plant will read as an accusation. It sort of is.

Some want the rumour. Let them have the rumour.

EMBER, keeper portrait
EMBER

Ember keeps the hot end, and is braver than she used to be.

Ember keeps the hot end of the Sanctum, where the cinnamon is, and she is a hearth-sprite: a small glowing thing the size of a banked coal, the warmth of a fire burned to its steady middle. She was, for centuries, the shyest keeper here, apologising for entering rooms, keeping to the edges, far too retiring for the boldest oil on the shelf.

She was handed it anyway. You cannot tend cinnamon for years, cannot live in its nerve and its refusal to be quiet, without some of it getting into you. Ember stopped apologising. She glows a little brighter now, and enters rooms as though she is allowed to be in them, which she is.

She still surprises herself, some evenings, by taking up space. She recommends it.

Crates, if you're serious

Cinnamon keeps company. None of it quiet.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE HOT END
Against my own commission, and I do mean against it:

Don't take it.

Back to the high street, then: the queue in the drizzle, the shop that sells October in a cardboard sleeve and charges extra for the sleeve. Buy the latte with the foam leaf, the mug, the plug-in refill with a hearth printed on the box. Let the room smell of the rumour of a spice for a fortnight, agree it's 'nice', buy the same again next year. Nobody up there will stop you.

STAY SCHEDULED.STAY SUBTLE.STAY SORT-OF-WARM.
You scrolled to the bottom of this. People happy with the impression don't do that.

You read the whole page. Nobody reads the whole page for a plug-in refill. You wanted the real heat, the plant the high street has spent twenty years faking while charging you for it. It's right here, for less than a fortnight of lattes. The rumour trade will cope without you.
