WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING

You have been buying focus from the people who sold you the distraction.

It's a neat arrangement. The same industry built the phone designed to fracture your attention every ninety seconds, then sold you seventeen apps and a productivity guru to put it back together. You installed all of them. You have a system now, a method, and the same eleven browser tabs open you had in 2019. And you call it 'busy'.

Busy is the costume. Under it, most afternoons, you're a person being interrupted.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Peppermint Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Mentha piperita, grown in India and bottled by hand in small batches. Colder than you remember: a clean green snap of menthol with a sweetness under it, the smell of a window thrown open in a stuffy room. It doesn't soothe and it doesn't drift. It sharpens the air, takes the stale edge off an afternoon, and asks nothing of your calendar.

The Notifications needle reads zero. It's a mint. It won't ping you at nine about your focus.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, peppermint is the cold green herb we keep for the flat afternoon, the old waking-scent that sharpens a room and asks nothing of your calendar.

  • The waking-scent: We keep it for the old rite of freshening: strewn on floors and rubbed on tables for centuries to wake a room and make it feel new.
  • Sharp again: For the cold, clear lift of a stuffy afternoon cracked open. Alert without a login, awake without an app.
  • A cold edge: Puts a clean green edge back on air that's gone soft and stale. A window thrown open, in a bottle.
  • The 3pm flat: Reach for it in the flat part of the afternoon, when the air's gone soft and the tabs have multiplied.

WHY YOU NEED IT

The afternoon does not need an app. It needs a window opened.

In folklore mint was never complicated: strewn for freshness, rubbed on a table to wake a room, reached for whenever a space had gone stale and wanted a cold green edge. A few drops in the flat part of the afternoon, when the air's soft and the tabs have multiplied. What it sharpens is the room, and the feel of the hour. The eleven tabs are between you and your conscience.

You don't need a system. You need fewer notifications and a colder room, one of which is on this page.

SAFETY NOTICE AROMA USE ONLY FILED THE SENSIBLE DESK

The sensible bit

For aroma use only with suitable diffuser or aromatherapy equipment. Do not ingest; do not add to food or drink; do not use in baths; do not apply to skin, even diluted or on broken skin; and do not use for massage or personal care. Avoid use during pregnancy and around children under 3. Avoid eyes and sensitive areas. Keep away from children, pets, heat, sparks and open flames. Store upright and tightly closed. Use in a well-ventilated space and never leave heated equipment unattended. Seek professional guidance if breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a health condition, or using around vulnerable people. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

GIFT · THE OPTIMISER

For the friend with four productivity apps, a colour-coded calendar and an alarming number of open tabs, who's optimised everything except the actual afternoon. A window, in a bottle.

To the optimiser

Fewer apps. Same result.

GIFT · THE STALE DESK

For the corner, office or otherwise, where the air's been the same temperature and the same staleness since the last reorganisation. Open it up.

To the stale desk

It cuts the stale. Nothing else here will.

GIFT · THE BUSY ONE

For the one who answers 'busy, so busy' to everything, up to and including 'how are you', and hasn't had a genuinely sharp afternoon since spring.

To the busy one

Adds no hours, installs nothing. Just makes 3pm worth standing in.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The one who treats 'busy' as a personality and a productivity system as a hobby, who'll file this beside the eleven unread focus apps and never uncork it. It won't optimise anything. That's the point.

Some want the dashboard. Leave them the dashboard.

PERRIN, keeper portrait
PERRIN

Perrin keeps the cold green end, and finished her work at half nine.

Perrin keeps the cold end of the Sanctum, the draughty corner near the mint where the air comes off the stone as though it has somewhere better to be. She's a brownie: one of the old household spirits that do the real work of a place while no one's watching, and take grave offence at being watched doing it. She does a full day's work before the surface has found its first coffee. Then she stops, which is the part the surface can't manage.

She's watched Surfacefolk call themselves 'busy' for centuries and has never understood it. Busy, to a brownie, is a thing you are briefly, at speed, on the way to being finished. Performing it all day, buying apps to feel more of it, strikes her as an elaborate way of getting nothing done, in public, for applause. She isn't idle in the afternoons. She's done.

Thank a brownie and she'll vanish a week from embarrassment. She does it for the doing, not the notice.

Sharpen the whole shelf

Peppermint keeps company. All of it cold.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE COLD END
Against my own commission, as ever:

Don't take it.

Off you go, back to the app store. There's a new one, apparently, that promises deep focus using a technique from a monk who's never met your inbox. Buy it. Buy the annual plan, the noise-cancelling everything, the productivity planner with the inspirational foil cover. Add them to the eleven tabs. Tell everyone how busy it's all keeping you.

STAY BUSY.STAY OPTIMISED.STAY INTERRUPTED.
You have four focus apps open right now and you're reading about a mint.

Which rather makes the point. You didn't want another system. You wanted the afternoon to feel sharp again, the cheap analogue way, with a window and a green bottle and nothing to log into. Six pounds. No dashboard. Sharpen the room instead of your app stack.
