They sealed the windows and called the air 'conditioned'. Conditioned to what, nobody says.
The building breathes for you now, and you've adapted so well you've stopped noticing. This is eucalyptus: the smell of a window thrown open in a room that forgot it was allowed one.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING

You have adapted, brilliantly, to air that isn't quite air.

The windows stopped opening. The office sealed itself and called it 'climate control', so the tower now decides what you breathe and won't say more. The same air circles round, warmed, cooled, weatherless. And you, being adaptable, adjusted. You stopped noticing the staleness. You stopped noticing you'd stopped.

Adaptation's a talent. You're spending yours on getting used to bad air.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Eucalyptus Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus from China, bottled in small batches by hand. Sharp, green, camphorous and wide: a forest floor after rain, a window flung open at the top of a hill. It doesn't linger; it cuts through the fug and gives a shut-up room its sky back.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, eucalyptus is the leaf we keep at the open end, for the rooms and days that have gone quietly airless, and want opening up.

  • A fresh start: We keep it for the clean-slate feeling: opening the day up and beginning again, windows wide.
  • Unstuck: For a shut-in, second-hand sort of mood. The brisk, wide-awake lift of a window flung open on a stuffy afternoon.
  • Aired out: Freshens a space gone quietly stale, brisk and green and no longer so pleased with itself. Weather, brought indoors.
  • The stale hour: Reach for it in the morning and the mid-afternoon slump, when a room most needs opening.

WHY YOU NEED IT

Take one room back from the building.

You can't open the office windows; they made sure of that. But in your own place you can do the thing the tower spent a fortune preventing: let some in. A few drops and an unnoticed, stuffy space wakes up, brisk and green. One room, aired on purpose. A small rebellion, and yours.

The tower does your breathing all day. Take back one room where you pick the air.

GIFT · THE SEALED-IN

For the friend in a glass box with windows that don't open, who breathes whatever the building decides and has forgotten what weather in a room feels like.

To the sealed-in

Take one room back.

GIFT · THE GREAT ADAPTER

For the one so good at adapting to the office, the air, the low-grade wrongness of it all, that they've stopped registering any of it.

To the great adapter

You adjusted. You didn't have to.

GIFT · THE STALE-ROOM OWNER

For the friend whose spare room hasn't been aired since a season nobody can name, and who's stopped noticing the fug entirely.

To the fug-blind

It went stale. This noticed.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The colleague who genuinely prefers the air-con, keeps every window shut on principle, and calls a fresh draught 'unsettling'. They'll take a lungful of real weather as a personal attack.

Some have made peace with the vent. Leave them to it.

FETTLE, keeper portrait
FETTLE

Fettle keeps the open end, and cannot abide a shut window.

Fettle keeps the open end of the Sanctum, the high draughty gallery where the eucalyptus is, and Fettle is a draught-imp: a small, quick, wind-bitten thing whose whole job is keeping things moving and flinging open anything with the nerve to shut. Standing still, to Fettle, is what dead air does.

Fettle has heard about the surface's sealed towers, windows painted shut, the same breath circling forever, and finds them genuinely hard to think about. To an imp of the draught, what can't move isn't air. It's a room holding its breath forever, hoping no one mentions it.

Fettle opens every window it passes, including several that were load-bearing.

Two crates, all windows open

Eucalyptus keeps company. All of it fresh.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE OPEN END
Against my own commission, as ever:

Don't take it.

Off you go, back into the conditioned air. Breathe what the building breathes for you, the recycled, warmed stuff that circles the sealed tower and never sees sky. Keep adapting. Keep not-noticing. Keep calling it 'climate control', as though someone's controlling it in your favour. Nobody up there will stop you. The windows are painted shut anyway.

STAY SEALED.STAY CONDITIONED.STAY ADAPTED.
You're so used to dead air you'd notice fresh air as a disturbance.

You read the whole page, which is a gulp of fresh attention in itself. You don't need the building's permission for the air in your own room. This is eucalyptus. It opens a space up and answers to no vent. Take one room back.
