Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

£11.00 10ML PASSION INDULGE
You have toned yourself down in so many rooms you have forgotten which volume was yours.
This flower never learned. It has never once been asked to be appropriate, dialled itself back for the room, or apologised for filling a doorway. From Madagascar, and entirely unbothered. Consider it a second opinion.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING

You have been keeping the drama for the television.

Somewhere it was decided that a big feeling at home is a character flaw, while a big feeling on a streaming platform is a subscription tier. So you watch other people's glamorous, beautifully lit nights in 4K, from the settee, being reasonable, and go to bed having felt something vicariously and nothing directly. Your own nights stay tasteful, manageable, lit like a waiting room.

You have a subscription to other people's passion and a strict policy against your own.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, steam distilled from the flowers of Cananga odorata in Madagascar, bottled by hand in small batches. The smell arrives before you've finished uncapping it: heavy, sweet and tropical, creamy and heady, banana-and-jasmine rich, the most dressed-up thing on the shelf. It doesn't do tasteful or restrained. It walks into a room in the good coat and never takes it off.

The Restraint needle reads zero. We checked. It seems to be the flower's own design decision.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS

Down in the Scent Sanctum, ylang ylang is the dressed-up flower we keep at the far end, the old scent of the feast and the occasion, for evenings that were meant to mean it.

  • The occasion: We keep it for the marked night: the room dressed on purpose, the folk scent of the feast and the celebration.
  • Unrestrained: For the rich, heady, gloriously immodest mood of a space that has made an effort and isn't sorry.
  • The good coat: Fills a space with heavy, sweet, tropical floral, creamy and dressed and entirely uninterested in tasteful.
  • The dressed night: Reach for the anniversary, the celebration, or a Tuesday you've decided to promote to an occasion.

WHY YOU NEED IT

You are allowed to make your own evening an occasion.

In folklore ylang ylang was never for the everyday: the flower of the feast, the wedding, the dressed-up night, for people with no intention of keeping things appropriate. Set a few drops going when you want a room to feel like it's finally happening rather than merely occurring. What it dresses is the night and the air of it. Tradition saved this for the occasions that mattered; you're allowed to decide a Tuesday qualifies.

A glamorous night needs no subscription. Just a flower that never learned to behave.

GIFT · THE TONED-DOWN

For the friend who's spent years being the sensible, appropriately-lit one, and owns, deep down, a much louder evening than they've been letting themselves have.

To the toned-down

Turn it back up. We'll wait.

GIFT · THE BEIGE LOUNGE

For the room that's been tasteful, beige and 'nice' since the day the sofa arrived, and has never once been dressed for anything. Dress it.

To the beige lounge

Make it an occasion. It's overdue.

GIFT · THE VICARIOUS ONE

For the one who watches everyone else's dramatic nights in 4K and keeps their own, by strict unspoken policy, in standard definition. The upgrade.

To the vicarious one

Have the evening. Don't just stream it.

DO NOT GIVE TO

The one who finds any big feeling embarrassing, keeps every room lit like a foyer, and calls a dressed-up night 'a bit much'. To them this reads as a scene. It is one.

Some prefer the foyer lighting. Leave them to it.

VESPERINE, keeper portrait
VESPERINE

Vesperine keeps the dressed end, and has never once been appropriate.

Vesperine keeps the warm, dim end of the Sanctum where the heavy florals live, and she's a peri: one of the old winged spirits story says were born from perfume and lamplight, radiant, extravagant, allergic to understatement. She doesn't enter a room so much as arrive in it, trailing scent and drama and the firm expectation of an audience. Mornings, she feels, are for spirits with less to express.

She's watched Surfacefolk dim themselves for years, and takes it as a personal affront. Told once that she was 'a bit much', she had it embroidered on a fan. She keeps the ylang because they're of one mind: that a night is a stage, that restraint is stagefright in a nicer coat, and that no one ever wished they'd shown slightly less.

She dresses for the evening every evening, in case the occasion has the sense to turn up.

Crates, for an evening about something

Ylang keeps company. All of it overdressed.

BEFORE YOU GOA WORD FROM THE DRESSED END
Against my own commission, as ever:

Don't take it.

Keep it standard definition. Keep the good nights on the television and yours tasteful, manageable, lit like a foyer. Watch other people be dramatic in 4K, feel a little something second-hand, and go up to bed reasonable and unadorned. A very sensible arrangement. Nobody could accuse you of making a scene.

STAY TASTEFUL.STAY APPROPRIATE.STAY IN THE FOYER LIGHTING.
A subscription to other people's passion, and a firm policy against your own.

You read the whole page, though. Reasonable, appropriate people don't do that. Some part of you owns a louder evening than you've been allowing, and would like it back. The flower never learned to behave. Have the evening in 3D.
